Ernie Cooksey

Ernie CookseyIt is with great sadness that we have to announce that Ernie lost his battle against cancer in the early hours of this morning, Ernie will always be fondly remembered by all those who he came in contact with, on the pitch Ernie always gave 100% and was a true gentleman off the pitch, he always found time to talk with his fans and has made many friends throughout his career, he will be greatly missed by all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ernie‘s partner Louise and family at this sad time. Grays Athletic Site

Amersham Town Link - 29th June 2008

Local sides Chesham United, from the Southern League, and Amersham Town, from the Spartan South Midlands League Division 1, have reached a mutually beneficial agreement to share resources for the 2008/09 season.

With Aylesbury United once again groundsharing at The Meadow, there is a need to reduce the number of games taking place on the pitch at Chesham. Subject to the agreement of their respective leagues, the Chesham United Football Club Youth, Ladies and Academy teams will play most of their home matches at Amersham Town’s Spratley Meadow.

In the absence of a Chesham Reserve team next season, United will make players available for either first team or reserve football at Amersham, giving United players not in the first team the opportunity to participate in regular competitive football whilst providing the Amersham’s Spartan League side with players to strengthen their teams where required. The two clubs will enter a team into the Suburban League, which is designed to provide a stepping stone for the best players from Amersham and Chesham, and will give regular senior football to the best of the youth talent in both clubs.

Chesham United Chairman, Charles Manchester confirmed “The whole point of our two clubs’ existence is football. We all love it and we want to extend this beautiful game to others in our community. We have been looking at ways to address the heavy usage of our pitch until such a time as we are in a position to invest heavily on the surface. It’s fantastic news that a solution has been found that not only suits our needs but also helps our neighbours, Amersham Town.”

Dale Welch, 1st Team Manager at Amersham, was equally enthusiastic. “We welcome this move and I look forward to working with Chesham, their Manager Andy Leese and with Charles Manchester. This partnership suits the needs of both managers perfectly as I feel our reserve team will benefit from having locally based players and by playing in a stronger Suburban League. I have a great squad of players that ended the season exceptionally well but we’ll also be able to strengthen in certain areas with Chesham’s support. I also feel that this is clearer pathway for progression at the club for the players now.Young players can play for Amersham with the hope of progressing through our youth team and possibly Chesham’s, as a newly ‘merged’ reserve team and possibly into Amersham’s or Chesham’s 1st teams. This agreement will give local players good opportunities to play senior football within a quality environment through both clubs’'

Chesham Manager Andy Leese is also pleased with the collaboration. “This link with Amersham Town provides both clubs with some real benefits on and off the pitch, and it shows the value of clubs working together for the benefit of the community. It will be down to Dale and I to make sure the mechanics of the playing side actually works, but we are like minded coaches, and we share the same objectives. The arrangement is a structured one and plenty of thought has gone into it. I am looking forward to the start of a relationship which we hope will become stronger and fruitful for both clubs as the season moves on.”

Major Goalkeeper Signing

Bobby SmithWe are delighted to announce the signing of a new goalkeeper, Bobby Smith.

Bobby, 19, joins us from Cheshunt where he was supporters player of the year last season. Previously, Bobby played for Stevenage Borough. He is a very highly rated keeper and replaces Richard Hayward, who has decided to play nearer home now that he has a young family. We're very grateful to Richard for his contribution to a season that exceeded our expectations in many ways and wish him well in the future. James Beasant still remains with us, so we will have options next season.

Management Team Extend Contracts

We are delighted to inform supporters that Andy Leese and Jon Meakes have extended their existing contracts, which now run to the end of the 2009/10 season.

Charles Manchester, Chairman, says “Last season was one of rebuilding the first team. Andy and Jon have laid the foundations with a footballing team that progressed well through the season, demonstrating a fantastic team spirit. Stability in the management will be crucial to a football club so I suggested an extension and am delighted that they readily agreed. This commitment will reassure supporters and players alike."
