Chesham followed up their 3-0 success over Wycombe in the Berks & Bucks Cup final with this 5-0 demolition in this pre-season friendly.
Wycombe fielded seven professional players, including former Chesham defender Robbie Rice. Chesham made three changes to the starting XI that beat Enfield on Tuesday night. Ed Chemlal, Kevin Cotton and Dom Marsala came in for Sam Ledger, Josh Cooper and Dave Fotheringham.
Performing in front of new first-team boss Peter Taylor, Wycombe didn't make the greatest of starts by conceding a goal after just 13 seconds, although there was a hint of controversy about it. Danny Burnell ran on to Steve Cawley's through ball and it appear he might have been offside the linesman kept his flag down and Burnell slotted past the goalkeeper. Chesham then had a couple of long-range efforts which flew comfortably off-target, and also a goalmouth scramble but Wycombe got the ball away. Burnell proved to be a menace for the Wycombe defence and he had a couple of chances from crosses but he couldn't score. There were a couple of stoppages as there were a few full-blooded challenges, and treatment was required. Ed Chemlal saw his header from a Dom Marsala cross hit the crossbar, then Wycombe had a chance but a free-kick went safely over the crossbar. Then after 37 minutes Chesham did open up a two-goal advantage but it will go down as a goalkeeping error. Burnell turned on the edge of the 18 yard box and had a shot which the Wycombe keeper looked to have covered, but the ball went through his gloves and trickled into the bottom corner of the net, for Burnell's 4th goal of the pre-season campaign.
The second half started with a Wycombe chance but they failed to test new goalkeeper Underwood as the ball went wide. Chesham then made the game safe as they scored a third after 4 minutes of the second-half as half-time substitute Sammy Winston scored his 2nd goal of these pre-season matches and he was to have two more later in the evening. Winston received Burnell's pass and rounded the keeper before tapping the ball home. The visitors were to have arguably their best chance of the evening three minutes later as a close-range shot was tipped onto the bar by Underwood and eventually scrambled away. However, Chesham extended their lead to four after 59 minutes when Winston was first to a Talbot cross down the right-hand side and headed the ball past the keeper. Just three minutes later, Chesham scored their fifth and final goal, when Burnell crossed and Winston finished with a neat header. Ed Chemlal had a long shot saved and Wycombe saw another chance hit the bar as a header from a cross was 6 inches too high. Dave Fotheringham probably thought he had a sixth on 76 minutes as his volley was tipped round the post by the flying keeper, and Winston had another one-on-one as he came inside but his shot was saved.
