The managers have been hard at work retaining last year’s squad and making new signings with announcements to come in the following weeks before training restarts in June. The pitch works at the Meadow mean that we won’t be returning home until later in pre-season than usual with four away games to start the schedule, but this will enable Craig & his pitch team to get the pitch in fantastic condition before the season starts on Saturday 9th August.
We start our pre-season on Saturday 12th July by making the short trip up the A355 to Beaconsfield Town to take on the Southern League Division One Central side, before a Tuesday night trip (15th July) to newly promoted Uxbridge who last year included a number of former & dual-registered Generals in their squad and beat Hanworth Villa 2-1 in the play off final.
Former Chesham player Chris Watters’ Royston side are next up on Saturday 19th July as we make the trip to Garden Walk for the first time since we both played in the Southern Premier in the 2017/2018 season, before another local trip to Broadwater on Tuesday 22nd July to face Berkhamsted who themselves are newly promoted to the Southern Premier South after winning the Southern League Division One Central play offs convincingly with a pair of 5-0 wins over Hadley & Flackwell Heath.
National League North side Oxford City are the first home fixture on Saturday 26th July with Ross Jenkins & former General Andy Ballard bringing their side to the Meadow after a lower mid table finish last year in the Northern equivalent of our division. Gary McCann’s Billiercay team missed out on the Isthmian Premier title on goal difference to Horsham last season and will provide a stern test as they have already recruited well with three strong additions from the National League South and will be coming to the Meadow on Tuesday 29th July for our final home test.
Before our final pre-season date sees us return to South Wales to take on our friends Merthyr Town at Penydarren Park, who have been placed in the National League North, this fixture will be a double header to give the whole squad a final run out before the season starts the following Saturday. Note: if you are making plans to attend this game, the first kick off will likely be around lunchtime due to the doubleheader so plan travel accordingly.
The final piece of our pre-season calendar is likely to be on Tuesday 5th August as we host our annual Open Training & OneChesham event where we welcome the young players from our Youth & Ladies sections to join us at the Meadow and watch a joint training session with our Men’s & Women’s first team squad – more details to follow on this as they are confirmed but pencil the date in your diary.
The Vanarama National League South season then gets underway on Saturday 9th August with fixtures expected to be released in early July as usual.
