For much of the game Chesham looked the more likely to break the deadlock, but finished grateful to Ben Goode for a penalty save in second-half stoppage time. There were just two changes to the side that beat Enfield Town last Saturday – Dan Bayliss replaced Callum Adebiyi whose wife was about to give birth, and Zak Joseph came in for Mitchell Weiss who was on the bench. Newcomer Jayden Bennetts made his debut as a second-half substitute after a spell playing in Germany.
The home side had two early efforts on goal, Deon Moore heading wide of the near post from a left-wing cross and TJ Bramble getting on the end of an Antony Pappdopoulos corner but heading downwards and up over the bar. However the rest of the half was fairly quiet, the best chance coming on 37 minutes when Papadopoulos cut in from the right and shot but Ben Goode dived to turn the ball round the post. Chesham had plenty of the ball and towards half-time began to threaten for the first time. Connor Roberts shot wide after Connor Stevens headed an Alex Babos free kick across goal, then Nathan Minhas had a shot from the edge of the area but home keeper Nathan Harness saved comfortably.
Early in the second half Chesham began to take control of the game. Zak Joseph fired over from long range, Alfie Williams hit a free kick which Harness dived to save and Alex Babos fired in a shot from over 30 yards that flew just over. Just after the hour mark Dan Bayliss headed over from an Alfie Williams free kick, after which the game went into another quiet spell. However on 77 minutes Maidstone’s Hamzad Kargbo, who had only been on the field for three minutes, was shown a straight red card for a nasty studs-up challenge on Josh Addae. Chesham tried to make the most of the man advantage and Josh Addae cut in from the right and shot but Harness dived to turn the ball round the post. Two minutes later Addae tried another shot which took a ddeflection and was just wide, then Jayden Bennetts cut in from the right and shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat. However in stoppage time Maidstone broke away and Bennetts was penalised for a challenge on Sam Corne right on the edge of the Chesham area, a decision that was soft to say the least. However Ben Goode dived the right way to keep out Ruben Carvalho’s penalty and grab the ball as the home forwards closed in.
