The win was achieved by a neat set-piece goal and a fine performance by a defence that has only conceded ten goals in twelve league games. There was only one change to the team that drew at Maidstone a week ago, with Mitchell Weiss restored to the side in place of Zak Joseph.
As so often this season the opening stages were quiet with little goalmouth action. Torquay had the first moment of not on 15 minutes, when Callum Dolan’s free kick bounced up off the defensive wall to Sam Dreyer who stuck out a foot and lifted the ball over the bar. The visitors won another free kick shortly afterwards but Sonny Blue Lo-Everton shot well over. Chesham came close on 25 minutes when Nathan Minhas headed the ball down to Connor Roberts who shot towards the bottom corner but keeper James Hamon dived to tip the ball round the post. From the resulting corner the ball ran loose in the box and Connor Stevens shot but Hamon saved comfortably. However Chesham were now on top and scored the game’s only goal on 36 minutes. Alfie Williams took a corner and crossed low to the near post, where Dan Bayliss turned the ball back and Nathan Minhas fired low past Hamon from just inside the area. Four minutes later Mitchell Weiss combined with Nathan Minhas who just just wide, then at the other end Callum Dolan set up Cian Dillon who shot hurriedly over the bar.
Chesham had the better chances in the opening stages of the second half, with Josh Addae cutting in and shooting but Hamon saved, then on the hour mark Nathan Minhas shot over after the keeper punched out a Josh Addae cross. Midway through the half Hamon came out of his area to clear but Samson Esan blocked his clearance only for Jay Foulston to get back and save the day for his team. Torquay made a number of substitutions but to little avail as Chesham’s defence stood firm. Callum Dolan shot from long range, Sonny Fish tried a shot on the turn from inside the area and Jordan Young shot powerfully but Ben Goode saved all three with relative ease. The fourth official announced eleven minutes of stoppage time which eventually became sixteen but Chesham’s defence held out.
