Chesham looked a beaten side after Worthing scored their second early in the second half, but pulled one back and laid siege to the visitors’ goal but were just unable to complete their comeback. There were two changes to the starting eleven, with Samson Esan and Jaiden Bartolo replacing Connor Roberts and Mitchell Weiss.
Chesham made a confident start and had the game’s first moment of note, with Alex Babos shooting just over after a Josh Addae throw was headed out. However Worthing soon grew into the game and took the lead midway through the half when Chesham’s defence failed to close down Josh Spong and he drove the ball low into the corner of the net from 25 yards. Worthing grew in confidence and dominated the rest of the half. Joel Colbran pulled the ball back from the by-line and Nathan Odokonyero shot but Ben Goode was able to save, then Spong ste up Brad Dolagha whose shot was deflected behind. The resulting corner led to a mad scramble in the Chesham six-yard box before Ben Goode was able to grab the ball. Chesham managed to hold out until half-time but rarely threatened at the other end.
Four minutes into the second half Odokonyero broke into the Chesham area and shot, his effort took a deflection and landed on the crossbar and Brad Dolaghan was caught by a despairing lunge from Connor Stevens as he went for the loose ball. Spong took the penalty and shot straight at Ben Goode who was able to parry, but this gave Spong an undeserved second chance which he took to make it 2-0. Chesham needed a boost and a double substitution just before the hour paid dividends, Josh Addae breaking into the penalty area and squaring for Jayden Bennetts to slide into the net at the near post to halve the deficit. Chesham now had the momentum and came close when an Alfie Williams corner was cleared, Giorgio Rasulo played the ball back in and a first-time effort from Dan Bayliss flew just wide. At the other end Teddy Jenks fired over after Joel Colbran seized on a loose clearance from Ben Goode, but Chesham were starting to stretch the home defence. In the next minute Matt McClure controlled a through pass from Alfie Williams, turned and shot but keeper Josh Jeffries dived to his left to keep the ball out. Chesham were now dominating and Zak Joseph shot just wide from the edge of the area, then another Joseph effort was tipped round the post by Jeffries. Alex Babos took the resulting corner and Karl Oliyide’s header was tipped over by Jeffries. However Worthing rode out the storm and eventually saw out time, but not without a certain amount of time-wasting.
