Just the one game played this week, and it sure felt good to get back to winning ways.
Yes last Saturday we completed the double over St Albans City with a 1-0 win at The Meadow in front of a crowd of just over 1,000, the goal coming from a Lewis Rolfe penalty. I have spoken previously about the pitch issues we have and the damage to the drainage, unfortunately that did contribute to what can only be described as a scrappy game, but a win is a win and that three points has taken us to the brink of safety and securing a second season in the National League South. A tremendous effort by everyone involved.
We now know that we face a huge cost to repair the pitch over the summer, even on top of any renovation grants we are able to get our hands on. Upon inspection it seems that the drainage system only extends 30 metres either side of the halfway line, but even then the water is not reaching the drains because the soil has become so compacted all around. We do have a solution, as I say it will come at a high cost, but we simply cannot have our pitch in the same bad condition next season.
Tomorrow (Saturday) we travel to Weston-Super-Mare, another side we are familiar with having played them in the Southern League from where they got promoted the season before us. They have made themselves very much at home at this level and are one of the top eight teams that look to be scrapping it out for the play-off places at the end of the season. A trip to the seaside is a favourite for many supporters so I hope plenty of you are planning an away day and will be at the game to give the team your support.
It is always good when you see the Chesham United colours away from home, and you don’t get much further than Limpopo in South Africa where our development kit that we passed on to the charity Kit Aid is now being proudly worn by a team out there. We are very proud to be the first ambassador club of this excellent charity, and we have donated hundreds of pieces of kit over the years, worn by less fortunate clubs than ourselves around the world.
For those that do not know, KitAid is a charity set up by, Derrick Williams MBE, who visited Tanzania on a WaterAid supporters’ trip in 1998. Derrick, being a mad footie fan, was amazed at the reception he received from children and adults in remote villages just because he was wearing one of his favourite football shirts (he follows Watford, Liverpool and Chesham Utd). If you’d like to support the KitAid cause, the easiest way to donate your unwanted football kit for them to find a new home for. Alternatively, if you don’t have any unwanted kit, but would still like to support the cause, cash donations can be made. Please do take the time to visit their website at www.kitaid.net.
As we approach the end of this season, we are offering large discounts on this season’s shirts. This year’s kit has been one of the most popular for may years, so get yourself along to the official club shop and pick yourself up a bargain. The shop is open on matchdays within the clubhouse.
The women’s 1st team had a weekend off last Sunday but the Development Squad were in action against local rivals Penn & Tylers Green. Despite a valiant defensive performance they ended up on the wrong end of a narrow 0-1 home defeat. The 1st team women are back in action this Sunday against top of the table Real Bedford. The visitors are chasing promotion so we will need to be at our very best to get a result. Kick-off is at 2:00pm on Sunday so do come down and cheer them on.
Plans are also well underway for our season closing Alex Horne Comedy match which takes place on Saturday 10th May. You may well have seen and heard Alex promoting the event, and the club, on TalkSport and across national media this week. If you attended this event last year you will know it is an incredible and totally unique day watching football, but not as we know it! Alex is once again pulling together two squads of Chesham’s finest footballers, musicians and comedians to participate in a match that I can guarantee will be like no other you will have seen this season. This event will sell out. Tickets are going fast so please secure yours now via our new ticketing platform available at cheshamunited.co.uk/tickets.
Finally, tickets are also available from the club website for the highly anticipated return of the Treorchy Choir at the Broadway Baptist Church in Chesham on Saturday 7th June, raising money for our charity partner, Bucks Mind. This is another event that will sellout, so please do book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.
Thank you for your support.
