After falling behind early in the second half Chesham made a triple substitution on the hour, which changed the course of the game and ultimately proved decisive. The starting eleven was unchanged from last week’s win at Maidenhead, with Lewis Rolfe and Nathan Minhas replacing Josh Dawodu and Will St Clair-Burton on the bench.
Chesham took an early lead when Alex Lafleur attempted to work an opening on the left, and the ball fell to Callum Adebiyi who fired into the far corner of the net. Shortly afterwards a Josh Addae throw was cleared to Matt Lench whose shot clipped the outside of the post with the keeper beaten. However the visitors came back into the game and equalised on 20 minutes, when Toby Bower’s corner was headed out as far as Rakish Bingham who fired into the net from just inside the area. Two minutes later Mason Bloomfield’s cross came to Bower who crossed back in from the left, and Dominic Poleons header landed on the roof of the net. However Farnborough faded and the rest of the half was largely uneventful, apart from a long-range effort from Alex Lafleur that beat keeper Jack Turner but was narrowly wide.
Early in the second half Farnborough took a surprise lead, Connor Harris scoring with a low drive that was remarkably similar to Adebiyi’s goal in the first half. Chesham came back with a deflected shot from Alex Babos that landed on the roof of the net. Chesham made a triple substitution on the hour but could have gone further behind, when Mason Bloomfield tried to take advantage of some defensive hesitation but his effort was partly blocked at the expense of a corner. However Chesham took control of the game and equalised on 70 minutes. Alex Lafleur crossed and Matt McClure attempted to force the ball in but was denied at the expense of a corner, which Alex Babos took and Connor Stevens glanced the ball towards the far post where Matt McClure headed in. Three minutes later Callum Adebiyi shot from inside the area and the ball hit Ollie Robinson on the hand and the referee gave a penalty, which may have been harsh although Robinson’s arm was raised. Nathan Minhas beat Turner from the spot to restore Chesham’s lead. On 84 minutes an Alex Babos cross found Matt McClure who seemed certain to score but Turner somehow managed to claw his header away. In stoppage time Chesham had another chance when Nathan Minhas was through on goal but Turner was able to save, then Farnborough had one more attack and Lachlan Byrd had two shots blocked in quick succession as Chesham’s defence held out.
